Hebrews 10 The Courage of Believing (Brief)

TEXT: Hebrews 10:39

Introduction -

"There is a courage to faith in Jesus Christ to the saving of one's soul." Courage becasue there are many enemies. Courage because there is much we may never know this side of Heaven. Courage because to enjoy the life of Christ requires embracing His death.

Hebrews 10:39 — But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Galatians 3:7 — Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

Romans 3:26 — To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

• The Courage of Believing
• Not pure brovado, While Walking around with Broken Nose and black eyes!
• but how TO OVERCOME? Faith is a fire that births fire. Where does our Courage Comme From?

Courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. It is not the absence of fear, but rather the ability to control it and act in accordance with your core values or beliefs despite feeling afraid.

• mental strength: grit
• moral strength: purpose and direction (I cannot go THAT WAY because I'm already going THIS WAY!)

1. "KNOWING GOD IS SATISFIED" - The Perfect Sacrifice (1-18) - COURAGE TO COME OUT OF THE SHADOWS, INTO THE LIGHT

• God is Holy and just and always deals with our sin.

• APPEASED Hebrews 10:1-4 — The Old Covenant with its annual and regular sacrifices were shadows of good things to come. Over and over they were made because they could not forgive sin.

• SATISFIED Hebrews 10:5-18 God's was never truly satisfifed (v.8 "no pleasure") in the "substitution" of animal sacrifices, but was satisfied in that they represented the death of Jesus.

• Jesus Sacrificed was made "once for all" (5x, 7:1,37;9:12...)

2. "KNOWING THE WAY TO GOD" - COURAGE TO TAKE A NEW AND A LIVING WAY (19-21)

• The light, with all its promise, brings a certain threat to darkness -- my darkness.
• Courage is not the absense of fear, but the defiance of it. (It is exciting!)

19 ¶ Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

• What good is the temple? It refleccts the Greater Reality
• The LAW No longer necessary? Why do we even need the Old Testament? THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Psalm 34:14 — Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

• DIETARY, CEREMONIAL, MORAL (heart)

Colosians 2:16 ¶ Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Mark 7:8 — And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? [shrimp and BBQ pork]

Psalm 34:14 — Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

3. "LET US"... (22-25)

• draw near to God,
• hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering,
• provoke one another to love and good works,
• assemble together for good of all

A. Draw Near to God (holiest of holies)

• A Curtain Separated - only High Priest could enter (He is approachable!)

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

• full assurance: entire confidence

B. Hold Fast the Profession of our Faith without Wavering

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

C. Provoke Another to Love and Good Works

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

• Good deeds don't save you, but they should follow a heart that loves Jesus.

D. Assemble Together for Good of All

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

4. WE ARE NOT (26-39) - THE TRULY FEARFUL THING

Hebrews 10:28-31 — It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

• You dont play with God. He judges his people.

Hebrews 10:28 — He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

• The potential of falling Back

Hebrews 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back [shrink, apostasy] unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. [ruin, loss, damnation]

Heb 10:38 — Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

• draw back: slink away and hide through fear
• my soul shall have no pleasure in him: to not enjoy the pleasure of God is to suffer his wrath. Without the heat of God's love, it is the coldest of colds.
