My Beloved Birthright THEME: There was a shamelessness in Jacob's request, a carelessness in how Esau traded away his birthright, but a preciousness to how I reflect on my spiritual inheritance. Shying away, running away from spiritual leadership. THUS ESAU DESPISED HIS BIRTHRIGHT What is an inheritance? What was Esau getting? "Sod/Boiled Pottage", "boiled a boiling", "bread and pottage of lentiles" v. 30 "red pottage" from which named "Edom" which means "red" (a chocolate colored mess) Genesis 25:29-34 — Ge 25:29 ¶ And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. 31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? 33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. despise: to disesteem: disdain, contemn(-ptible), + think to scorn, vile person. birthright: "first born ling" Genesis 25:32 — And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? "I am at the point to die" (Was Esau over reacting?) Thus the wicked prefer their worldly conveniences over God's spiritual graces Birthright; that right which belonged to the first-born, of succeeding, on the death of his father: the government and spiritual instruction of the family, officiating as their priest, offering sacrifices, and thus securing the blessings with which the performance of these duties would be connected. A double share of the inheritance also fell to him.
