Sin

Introduction - What is Sin? "Good and Bad" and "Right and Wrong"

I. SIN IS NOT GOOD ["GOOD" A Perfect Creation: Harmony, Unity]

Genesis 1:31 — And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. [1:4,10,12,18,21,25,31]

Genesis 3:6 — And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. {pleasant: Heb. a desire}

Sin as Bound to Punishment: It’s also important to remember that sin not only has consequences—a broken humanity, a fallen world, a disordered creation—it also makes one liable for punishment. This idea is conveyed through the New Testament Greek word enochos, defined as bound, under obligation, subject to, liable. According to Strong’s Concordance, it can be used in a technical sense, “denoting the connection of a person either with his crime, or with the penalty or trial, or with that against whom or which he has offended.” This is the sense in which Jesus uses the word in Matthew 5:21-22, “You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment. But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment.”

II. Sin is an Agenda (Agents of Sin)

1. The Serpent

Genesis 3:1 — Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Mt 4:1 — Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Acts 10:38 — How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

2. Anti-christ Spirit, "Mystery of Iniquity"

2 Thesalonians 2:7 &mdas; For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Ephesians 6:12 — For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

1 John 2:18 — Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

1 John 2:22 — Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:3 — And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

2 John 1:7 — For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

1 Corinthians 2:12 — Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Ephesians 2:2 — Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3. Human Agents (co-conspirators)

John 8:44 — Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Acts 13:10 — Ac 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. 9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, 10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

1 John 4:1 — Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

III. Sin is Dangerous and Destructive

(to: relationships, beauty, good, right liberty)

James 1:14-15 — But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

John 8:34).

IV. Sin is "Offensive" (What does it 'offend'?)

God

Genesis 1:27 — So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Sin has Victims

Genesis — 42:22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
