INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND TO OUR TEXTS:

I Samuel 30:1-10 David’s Story David had been in hiding with the Philistines, but when it came time for the Philistines to engage in battle with Israel and king Saul, some of the Philistines became nervous about David being around. The Philistines sent David away and David on his return home found his city burnt down and his family and the families of his men stolen away. David calls for the ephod and prays Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

I Samuel 31:1-7  Saul’s Story

Saul and Isreal fought the Philistines. Israel was defeated. Saul and his sons fled to Gilboa and Saul, his armourbearer, and Saul’s three sons including Jonathan were all killed.

  1. INTRODUCTION OF OUR SUBJECT

It is miraculous and extensive the work God does in a person. He does great and mighty things to us and for us. He does those things for us that we cannot do for ourselves. Ultimately all the glory and credit for the victories of life belong solely to Him. He makes it possible, enables us and guarantees the victory. In comparing Saul’s Story with David’s Story, where is the disconnect from Saul and his victory?

As a measure of proving us, there are things God does not do FOR us. The Christian experience is not entirely reactionary or consisting of that which happens TO us. We are not still born infants. There are things (though by God’s grace) we must do for ourselves. And if we do not do these things, we absolutely can lose that which God gives us and does for us.

    REPENT – ASK – CHOOSE - LEARN** – **FIGHT** - **BELIEVE
  1. REPENT -Transparently deal with our sin before God.

**Favor with God must be sought after and protected at any cost.
**Sin makes us unfit for fellowship and battle. Saul went into battle with sin in his heart
Why did Saul lose favor with God? Unrepented Sin PRIDE
REMAIN HUMBLE BEFORE GOD AT ANY COST.

James 4:6—… resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Saul was mistaken for one of the prophets, but did not HUMBLE HIMSELF.

  1. PRAY - Ask, Revival, We have not because we ask not.

**Gods direction must be sought after and followed.
**      Saul was fighting God’s will while David was completely resigned to it
2Sa 5:19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines?...

2Sa 5:24 And let it be, when thou hearest **the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees,** that then thou shalt bestir thyself: …
  1. CHOOSE - God will not move further until we have done what we already know to do. We must choose to do good. WILL to do

**Principle must be more important than Convenience.**

1 Sam 24:10-Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed.

  1. LEARN - Our mastery of faith, truth and the life in the Spirit must be continuous.

**We must learn of our master: Skills – prayer/bow
**Main cause of Israel’s defeat was the Philistine’s advantage of the bow, therefore David responds later by Teaching Judah the bow

Ps144:1_ Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:_ \

We must be taught & We must learn. **We must be taught how to trust God and learn.
**Ho 4:6. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Pray that ye enter not into temptation -- Have to pray – Truth -- Spirit of God
Solomon prayed the words that david spoke. II Chron.6:41-42; Ps 132:(1,) 8-10,(16)

  1. FIGHT/PURSUE - The battle is the Lord’s, but we must pursue the enemy.

**We must be winning at home if we are to win abroad
**David was fighting to recover his family and his men’s families

Saul was tormented of the devil in his own mind. He could not pray for himself, let alone

his nation.

**WE Must Pursue the Enemy**

2Sa 22:38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them

**Saul saved Agag. **1Sa 15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag,

We must Destroy the Enemy \

  1. BELIEVE/EXPECT – Raise our Level of Expectation from God.

Our goal must be absolute victory-- no compromise
Compromise will never win against satan. He will get the better end of the deal every time.
