III. An example of Suffering Affliction, and of Patience (vs. 7-11)

  • Job 1:6-12 "The patience of Job"
  • "the sons of God (angels) came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan (the accuser) came also"
  • Job lost all of his property,
  • his children died,
  • and he suffered great physical agony.
  • In the midst of his suffering, Job was visited by three friends (Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar). Though Job's friends intended to comfort him, they accused him of sin. HOW NOT TO COMFORT
  • Elihu, a younger man who arrives later, in Job 32 gives the last and longest single speech in the Job (32-37).Elihu speaks up because he is “very angry with Job for justifying himself rather than God” and with Job’s three friends, “because they had found no way to refute Job, and yet had condemned him” The other 3 friends had been missing the mark, but perhaps Elihu got a bit closer to home for Job.
  • "THE END OF THE LORD" The ultimate goal or purpose of God in allowing the afflication of Job.
  • Having even become a proverb, How patient was Job actually? (What about me?)

Job 1:20-22 — Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, 21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

  • Did Job Charge God follishly? (slander, frivilously) Evidently looked like he did to Job's friends!

A. NOT SO PATIENT JOB

  • Job 3:3 - He wishes he had never been born.
  • Job 6:4 – It’s all God’s fault!
  • Job 7:21 – He has a death wish, and after he dies, God won’t know where he is, in essence, God will soon forget about him.
  • Job 9:2,14,20,33 – Not matter what I say ... God doesn’t care if I’m guilty or innocent. What chance of defense do I have against God?
  • Job 10:8,9,18 - God made me and now He wants to crush me. Again in v.18, Why allow me to be born if all this was going to happen?

B. JOB'S FRUSTRATION was the result of him not being given a clear explanation

Job 10:1,2 — My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. 2 I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

  • the book of Job is a challenge to the idea that: a) God blesses those who are righteous and b) punishes those who are wicked in this life and that is all there is to it. (Job 1:8 have you considered my servent job?)

C. THE PATIENCE OF JOB and THE END OF THE LORD (James 5:11)

Job 42:3-6 — Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. 4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. 6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. (compare with Job 1:20-22)

  • Jobs patience
  • Job 42:12-17, The End of Job

IV. Prayer (vs. 12-20)

  • Jas 5:12 - let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay
  • 13-18 PRAY
  • 19,20 RESTORATION
