Motivations for Purity

I. Distinctively Christian + Separateness

1 Thessalonians 5:22 — Abstain from all appearance of evil.

a. Sanctification

Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

1Th 5:23 ¶ And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Heb 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

a. The "World"

1 John 2:15 — Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

b. Influenced - Desensitized

Matthew 6:22 — The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

Lamentations 3:51 — Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.

Psalms 101:3 — I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

  • Culture and Its Influence
  • Conscience Seared
  • Keeping the door to our heart closed to the devil.

Job 31:1 ¶ I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

c. Depart

2 Timothy 2:19 — Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

II. The Christian Ideal

Matthew 5:48 — Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

  • God is absolutely true and absolutely holy.

Hebrews 1:9 — Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

a. "Lifting a Standard"

b. The Conversation of the Ages + Movements

Every believer although autonomous and a free moral agent enters into Christ from within some sort of context.

III. Compromise + Backsliding

Luke 9:62 &dmdash; And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

IV. The Impending "End" & Readiness / Being "Right" Before God

Matthew 24:44 — Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Luke 13:27 — But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
