3.2.5 1 Peter Milk and Meat

1 Peter 2:2

Hebrews 5:14

Biblical commands for moving from milk to solid food

  1. Put away sinful attitudes—malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander (1 Peter 2:1).
  2. Crave the pure Word so that you may grow (1 Peter 2:2).
  3. Become skilled in the word of righteousness rather than remaining inexperienced (Hebrews 5:13).
  4. Train your discernment through constant practice (Hebrews 5:14).
  5. Move beyond the elementary foundation toward maturity without abandoning that foundation (Hebrews 6:1–2).
  6. Stop living according to jealousy, strife, and human factions (1 Corinthians 3:1–4).
  7. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you can discern God’s will (Romans 12:2).
  8. Test everything and hold firmly to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
  9. Grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
  10. Practice what you have learned (Philippians 4:9; James 1:22). A practical test Ask these questions about a teaching:
  • Is it foundational instruction, or does it build upon an established foundation?
  • Does it merely give information, or require trained moral discernment?
  • Can I explain it accurately from Scripture?
  • Can I recognize errors concerning it?
  • Am I obeying it consistently?
  • Does it produce humility, love, holiness, and unity?
  • Can I use it responsibly to help another believer? The clearest distinction is this: Milk is truth being learned; solid food is truth deeply understood, tested, and practiced by a believer whose character and discernment are becoming mature. Complexity alone does not make a teaching “meat.” A complicated teaching without obedience can still accompany spiritual infancy.
