CULTS

STUDY QUESTIONS—CHAPTERS 2 & 3

  1. What are the “sentinels of Scripture”?  (Give references) (3pts each reference; 9pts. total

Deuteronomy 4:2  “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.”

Proverbs 30:6  “Add thou not unto His words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

Revelation 22:18,19  “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”

  1. Does the Bible contain truth?  (5pts. for statement; 1pt. Yes or No)

The Bible (the Word of god) is TRUTH; it doesn’t only contain TRUTH!  Therefore: Yes, it is truth; OR, No, it doesn’t only contain truth.

  1. What is the foremost mark of a cult?  (6pts.)

The foremost mark of a cult is “that it claims for its authority some revelation…apart from Scripture.”  (Emphasis added.)

  1. What cardinal doctrine is expressed in John 1:1? (6pts.)

John 1:1 declares that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is final truth, the ultimate Word.

  1. What follows upon the belief that the Bible is God’s final and only authority? (6pts.)

Intensified study of the Word of God follows the belief that the Bible is God’s final and only authority.

  1. When does God’s Word become effective in our lives? (6pts.)

God’s Word becomes effective in us “when we build [it] into the very fiber of our personal beings,” when we saturate our minds (thoughts), etc. with it.

  1. What are the two greatest reasons for the proliferation of the cults? (3pts each reason; 6pts. total)
  1. “…Ignorance of Holy Scripture on the part of Christians”
  2. “…Unwillingness on the part of the people of God to transmit divine truth by way of a testimony for Christ to others who need yet to receive salvation in Christ.”

  1. Is any revelation that does not come specifically/directly from the Bible necessarily “extra-Biblical”? (1pt. for No, 5pts. for statement)

No, not necessarily.  The information or revelation that I am wearing a (particular colr/style) tie, or that I have a (particular color) handkerchief in my pocket, does not come from scripture, yet at the same time that revelation is not in violation of any Scripture either.

  1. What must one do to be saved? (6pts.)

Actually there is nothing left to do for one to be saved.  The work was finished on the Cross by Jesus Christ.  Unless, one considers repentance and faith as something to do, THEN that is ALL one must do.  NOTE: AND, THE FAITH ISN’T EVEN OF SELF.

  1. What is the basis of salvation? (6pts.)

The finished work of Christ alone; our repentance to align ourselves with that finished work; and our exercise of the faith He has “dealt to every man” in that finished work.

  1. What does Scripture say about salvation that is based on human effort? (6pts.)

It says such “salvation” is cursed.  (Galatians 3:10,11, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.  11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.”)

  1. Define the following terms: justification, imputed righteousness, and grace. (4pts. each definition; 12pts. total)

Justification: the act or positioning of one as being righteous; declared righteous.

Imputed righteousness: righteousness that is placed on one’s account.

Grace: God’s hand reaching down to man; unmerited favor.

  1. Does personal righteousness or works have anything to do with one’s salvation?  (Do not merely restate the question in your answer.  Thank you.) (5pts. for statement; 1pt. Yes or No)

No, one is saved through the finished work of Christ.  OR, Yes, but not in getting saved.  Personal righteousness follows upon salvation like fruit on a tree.

  1. What are the two most popular alternative doctrines of salvation? (3pts each alternative; 6pts. total)
  1. Salvation by membership
  2. Salvation by works

  1. What would be true if salvation did come by the law? (6pts.)

If salvation came by law, then Christ died in vain.  (Galatians 2:21, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

EXTRA CREDIT (possible 20 points): Reproduce the diagram given in class depicting the basis of our salvation using your own selection from the Bible for each level.
