Psalm 1

Ps 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

 6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Pr 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

 6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

 9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

 20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

 23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

 24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly but walks in godly counsel, God’s Eternal Purpose is for us to walk in His Counsel

Acquaint them with the will of God in doubtful cases, and to explain the laws of God

Ex 18:13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

 14 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

 15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

 16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

 17 And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

 20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

 21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

 22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

 24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

 26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

 27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

Ne 6:4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

Ps 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Isa 5:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

(His work--counsel; the threatened judgments of God.  They are scorners) and say this in ridicule.

Isa 28:29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

When a man gives place to ungodly counsel, or to his own self(sin nature is a term misused), (stands in the way of sinners) he begins to forget himself in his sin, and so falls into contempt of God, which is called the seat of the scorners.

(sin nature is a term misused that some just accept and other’s try to ignor)

Ro 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Ro 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

Ro 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Ro 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Ro 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Ro 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Ro 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Ro 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Ga 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Ga 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

1Co 3:1 ¶ And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

 Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

Col 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Col 2:23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Col 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Heb 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

Eph 2:1 ¶ And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

2Pe 2:10 ¶ But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

2Pe 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

1Jo 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Lu 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Psalm---a set piece of music, a sacred song, Singing is the voice of joy

The book of Psalms is most helpful for devotions

1Co 14:26 ¶ How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

The Spirit's filling is the personal manifestation of Christ to the believer who walks obediently day by day.

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

A consciousness of His presence and His leadership—moment by moment. This consciousness is the believer's privilege.

The Spirit's filling is not just an automatic experience.

The responsibility of being filled with the Spirit rests upon the shoulders of the believer. He is continually filled only as he walks obediently to Christ

Pr 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

Joh 16:25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

There are three characters, each exceeding the other in sinfulness.

The ungodly, sinners, scornful

There are three words which mark three different degrees of evil conduct

The ungodly man has his counsel; the sinner has his way; and the scorner has his seat

The ungodly man is unconcerned about true religion; he is neither zealous for his own salvation, nor for that of others

He counsels not to trouble themselves about praying, reading, meditating on the Lord and on the Word unto faith and repentance.

Counseling with the ungodly must be avoided, it make us more like them

The ungodly neglect the truth

Sinners refuse to comply with the truth

Scorners reject the truth

Ps 1:1 ¶ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Pr 1:10 ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

4:14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Ps 1:6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Ps 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Pr 1:20 ¶ Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

They scoff at religion and contemn the word and faithful ministers of God.

They despise, as well as reject, truth.

Ps 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Divine revelation is wisdom

Blessing and cursing

Blessing and Judgment

Pr 1:33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

It is dangerous to listen to the ungodly

It is most dangerous to not listen to the call of God. (The wisdom of God)

Or seek to live without the blessing of God.

The righteous plow the earth and sow a harvest

The ungodly plow the seas and the waves return and the ways are forgotten

Psalm 1:6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Pr 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

Not until calls of love have been rejected does the Lord give stern rebuke; but when grace has been neglected, and even insulted, justice must speak in tones of thunder.

The Lord Jesus wept over sinners in the days of his flesh, and still by his Church entreat and warn them, and yearn over them; but it will not always be so, for the time cometh when he will have no pity, but will utterly reject the cries and petitions of his enemies.  They say that the sweetest wine makes the sharpest vinegar, and so the very gentleness and tenderness of Jesus will make him the more terrible when his patience at length turns to wrath.  Oh! may all of us be warned by the terrible words in Pr 1:24-31

Don’t neglect God’s wisdom, don’t refuse the invitations of God’s Grace

Know the Grace and wisdom Of God to Praise, serve Him, speak for Him

Pr 1:4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

worldly men, seek their portion in this life

Godly men seek the truth

2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

We must grow in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We must Follow on to know the Lord.

Ho 6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Labour to know him more clearly and more fully, to know more of Christ...so as to be more like him and to love him better. This is the knowledge of Christ the apostle Paul reached after and desired to attain, Phil. 3:10. Such a knowledge of Christ as conforms us more to him and [will] preserve us from falling off in times of...apostasy; and those who experience...the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will...give thanks and praise to him, To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen
