SOS 1:3 The Person of the Bridegroom

Preached: October 25, 1978 by James R. Reynolds, Sr.

Song of Solomon 1:3 — Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.

INTRODUCTION

This lesson is about the attributes of the Bridegroom, but includes the Bride in that she will be like Him. She is talking about HIM. The Church is in need of a new revelation of His Person more than anything else.

Matthew 16:13-18 — When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

NOTE:

Peter — petros — little stone

rock — petra — great ledge The Revelation of Christ

The devil has us distracted and busy on so many things, and we need a revelation of the Person of Christ and to see Him like He is. It is the subtle attempt of hell to get us involved with all these other things

God is a miracle worker, but the devil works miracles, too. Some of the greatest miracles that have ever been wrought are going to be wrought in these last times through the power of the devil.

Revelation 13:13-15

And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

"Miracles are never any gauge of whether it is God."

Yes, God confirms His Word with signs, but always remember this:

Whenever the Holy Spirit is working there is going to be a manifestation of Holiness. If a miracle does not produce a Holy life, I guarantee you it is not the Holy Ghost. If a person is operating in the Holy Spirit there is going to be evidence of Holiness.

The highlight of our day is deception, and we must be careful that we not be deceived.

Luke 21:8

And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

John 16:13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

In situations you do not know the whole the story, but when you see a pattern of life you have a right to judge it according to the Scripture.

I Corinthians 2:15

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

The devil is trying to get us off of the main line, by distortion and misinterpretation of the text.

Matthew 7:23

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

We must have a relationship with Him, and get our eyes on Him. We need to see Him like He is.

  1. His Fragrant Characteristics

She is talking about her love for Him. "…therefore do the virgins love thee." She is communicating here that she is one of many that love him, but she loves Him above all the others. There is only one among all the others that really loves Him.

"Because of the savour of thy good ointments…"

  • "savour" Hebrew — 'reyach': odor (as if blown):--savour, scent, smell, or fragrance.

Genesis 8:21

And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

  • "good" Hebrew —'towb': good, beautiful, best, better, precious.

Isaiah 39:8

Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, For there shall be peace and truth in my days.

  • "ointments" Hebrew — 'shemen': oil, ointment, grease, anointing.

Other Translations:

"The odor of your ointments is fragrant." (AMPLIFIED)

"Thine oils have a goodly fragrance." (OTHER)

Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love Thee.

    1. The Wise Men from the East

      1. Gold — Divinity

This reveals to us His Heavenly glory. These gifts were no coincidence, but were the working of God. Jesus came out of the ivory palaces of Heaven and He laid aside the glory He had with the Father before the foundations of the world when came to us as the babe of Bethlehem.

John 17:5

And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Philippians 2:6-8

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

      1. Frankincense — Life

Exodus 30:34

And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:

Leviticus 2:2

And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD:

When you burn something with a fragrance it fills the whole house. The Life of Jesus as fragrance filled the whole earth and it filled the Heavens. There has never been a life that has smelled as beautiful as the life of Jesus. His life is so fragrant!

      1. Myrrh — Sufferings

The Cross — His Death — The Barrenness He Endured

Hebrews 2:10

For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Hebrews 5:8

Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

"He drank the bitter that we might drink the sweet."

(Myrrh is a very bitter herb, but it has a very sweet fragrance.)

    1. Jesus was Anointed Twice

      1. At the Beginning of Christ's Ministry

Luke 7:36-50 (verses 37 & 38)

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Acts 10:38

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

      1. Just Before Christ's Death & Burial

John 12:3-8 (verses 3 & 7)

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

Just as much as you need an anointing on your life to live for God and to do the work of God, you are going to need the anointing to take you to the cross or you will never go. It is the hardest thing in the world to crucify the flesh, but God wants to anoint your life and bring it to the cross. Are you dead?

There was no stench in Christ's death, but only a beautiful fragrance! That fragrance saturated not only that day, but all of eternity.

Psalm 16:10

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

His little Bride is going to come to that place of not having the stench

of the flesh, but having that sweet, beautiful fragrance.

    1. Our Greatest Need

We do not realize how bad we smell until we get around Him Who smells so beautifully.

      1. The Fragrance of His Humility

When you compare yourself to others you might say, "Well, I'm doing a pretty good job." When we get close to Him and the fragrance of His Humility then do we begin to smell the stench of our own pride.

      1. The Fragrance of His Purity and Holiness

We are not the only ones standing up for truth and having the truth. God is revealing truth all around the world today by his Spirit. He is leading people out sin and into a revelation of Himself—into a life of purity and holiness.

The farther away you get away from the Lord, the more your flesh can manifest itself without you smelling it. People say, "Well, I don't see the need for all that straining and struggling." That is because they are so far off. The way to get closer to Him is by the truth.

John 8:32

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The closer you get to Him, the greater His fragrance will become. Getting close to Him will help you see two things: 1) How badly you smell and 2) How much you need Him. He wants you to smell like Himself.

      1. The Fragrance of His Patience

The farther off we are from Him the less these things bother us, but the closer we get the more we realize the beauty and fragrance of His patience and the stench of our own impatience. This contrast is seen more obviously in our closeness to Him.

God wants to give us that which His Son has. Does God want to put up with our spiritual stench? He is going to have a bride wearing not garments we have made but that which He has provided.

Psalm 45:8

All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

Romans 13:12

The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

The beauty of Jesus is going to be in the life of the Believer that makes up the Bride. If we do not smell like Jesus it is a sure indication that we have not been in His presence.

  1. His Precious Name

"…thy name is as ointment poured forth.."

Ointment in a container does not give forth its fragrance, but it must be poured out.

  • Heavenly Solomon — Prince of Peace

  • Christ — Anointed

Exodus 30:25,30,33

And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.

Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.

God wants you to smell like Jesus when you come into His presence and when you minister to the people.

  • Jesus — Savior

Jesus is the source and fountain of all fragrance in Heaven and in earth. When they nailed Him to the cross and broke His Body, they broke the box and out came such a sweet fragrance, "Father, forgive them. They don't know what they are doing." The fragrance of the alabaster box being broken was released on the cross. (Matthew 26:7)

You can't speak the name of Jesus without something happening. His name is like ointment poured forth!

Jeremiah 8:22

Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

When the fragrance of His name is poured forth, the devil does not like it. The songwriter put it this way, "Precious name, Oh How sweet! Hope of earth and Joy of Heaven."

    1. His Name is Salvation

    1. His Name is Authority

    1. His Name is Healing

    1. His Name is Victory

  1. The Love They Have for Him

    1. We love Him because He first loved us.

I John 4:19

We love Him, because He first loved us.

    1. We desire to not be defiled.

John 14:15

If ye love Me, keep my commandments.

    1. The closer we walk the greater our love will be for each other.

John 17:21

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
