SOS 2:1 The Preeminence of the Bridegroom

Preached by James R. Reynolds, Sr. on December 27, 1978.

Song of Solomon 2:1 — I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

I. The Preeminence of His Person

He is saying that He is the 'I Am,' who is the Lily of the Valleys.

What He was, He is, and what He is, He always will be.

    1. The Eternal One

Exodus 3:14

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Before there was anything else, He was, and after there won't be anything left, He will be.

John 8:56-58

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Malachi 3:6

For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

You may change your mind about Him, but He will never change His mind about you. He's in love with you, and He wants you for Himself. He will make overtures to you even while you are flirting with the world.

    1. The Covenant-Keeping One

Hebrews 6:13, 14

For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

Hebrews 6:17, 18

Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

He is not only the Eternal One that exists, but He is One that is concerned with His people.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

God gave seven compound covenant names to Israel. Seven is a complete number. Gad has made a total and complete covenant with His people.

    1. The All-Powerful One

God is the One that was, and brought all things into being, He is the One that is, and upholds all things by His Word, and He is the One that shall be, and keeps control of all things.

Matthew 28:18, 20b

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

God loves you, and He wants to do things for you. We need to read the contract. God wants us to understand all He has provided for us and to believe it.

  1. The Preeminence of His Beauty

"I am the rose of Sharon…"

    1. The Place of the Rose

Isaiah 33:9

The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

Isaiah 53:1, 2

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

Only Jesus can bring satisfaction inside.

    1. The Beauty of the Rose

The rose is the most beautiful of all flowers. He is the preeminent One.

    1. The Value of the Rose

The value of a rose is in its beauty and its fragrance. It is in the pleasure you get from looking at and smelling it. The value of the rose is in itself.

Christians are so prone to get so thrilled and excited about things. God is so much more than a source of supply. Seek the giver rather than the gift.

He wants us to grasp hold of the truth of who He is.

John 1:29

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Hebrews 12:2

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

We do not love Him because of the benefits, but we love Him because we know Him.

Psalm 37:4

Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

  1. The Preeminence of His Character

"…and the lily of the valleys."

    1. The Lily is White—Purity

There was no stain or mark of sin in Him; there was no color of the world in Him.

Hebrews 4:15

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Jesus had the same earthly dwelling as we had, and He overcame. The same power that operated in Him will operate in the Believer. We can be as lily-white as He is.

    1. The Lily Grows in the Valley

He is one Lily in a whole lot of valleys. Jesus went through all valleys for us.

  • Jesus went through the Valley of Humiliation

I Peter 5:6

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Philippians 2:7

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

  • Jesus went through the Valley of Rejection

Hebrews 12:11

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Mark 14:50

And they all forsook him, and fled.

Matthew 27:46

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

The little bride is going to be rejected by all the daughters of Jerusalem. The church will reject you, and if she does not reject you, it is because you are one of them. When you cease to be one of them, you will be rejected.

If you are willing to go through the valley, He will make you the lily.

  • Jesus went through the Valley of Suffering

Philippians 3:10

That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

If you are going to have His fragrance, you are going to have His experience.

Hebrews 12:6

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

Whatever God is revealing in His Word, He will perform and perfect.
