Obedience of Faith

Act ONLY on what you know to be true

Romans 16:26 — But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

1. Principle, Proverb, Promise

Harmony of Mark 4:24 and Luke 8:18

Mark 4:24 — And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.

Luke 8:18 — Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

I. Principle

a. Take heed what ye hear (Mark 4:24)

b. Take heed therefore how ye hear (Luke 8:18)

II. Proverb

a. with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you (Mark 4:24)

III. Promise

a. unto you that hear shall more be given (Mark 4:24)

b. for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; (Luke 8:18)

c. and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. (Luke 8:18)

2. Knowing What is True brings Responsibility

James 4:17 — Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

1 Peter 1:22 — Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

3. Obedience in the Midst of Rejection

Matthew 10:1 — And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Matthew 10:14 — And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Acts 13:51 — But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

Mark 3:13 — And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him. 14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

Mark 6:1,5 — 1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. 5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

Mark 6:7,11 — And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Mark 6:12,13 — And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

Luke 6:12 — And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

Luke 9:1,2 — Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

Luke 9:5 — And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

4. They Understood Not Until: the Master Teacher

  • Even the disciples did not always understand what Jesus is saying ("at the first").

Luke 9:45 — But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Mark 9:32 — But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Luke 2:50 — And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

Luke 18:34 — And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

John 10:6 — This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

John 12:16 — These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

  • The Master Teacher

John 7:39 — (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 14:26 — But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

5. Through Obedience, Help Others to Believe

Luke 10:1 — After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. 2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. 3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

Matthew 10:16 — Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Philippians 2:15 — That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Luke 9:41 — And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

The disbelief of the people was a constant concern to Jesus.

The disbelief of today is a constant concern for us as well, but the Lord will help us to get certain people to believe and obey, as we believe and obey.

Luke 9:43,44 — And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

1 Peter 5:6 — Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
