  • TITLE: The Birth of Jesus Christ

Mt 1:18 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Introduction

For some Christmas is their favorite time of the year and for others it is a reminder of loneliness.

I. The Miracle of the Virgin Birth

A. Jesus is conceived in Mary by the Holy Ghost.

B. Joseph is Called of God

… the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost

1. Called by the Angel

  • "Thou son of David" What a glorious call. He had to have known he was in the line of David. What a glorious position!

The elect are those who pay attention to their position in Christ. God made His call crystal clear to Joseph.

  • "fear not" to take Mary as thy wife

Let God speak His peace to you and His plan for your life. Our heart can be full of unbelief and fear, God deal with us and if we are not sensitive, in our hardness, can turn and blame God.

  • Joseph would be the earthly father of the Messiah.

2. Joseph knew the prophecies and Believed the Prophecies but …

Joseph believed the prophecies would one day be fulfilled, but being fulfilled WITH HIM is a revelation!

3. How?

Matthew 1:20 — But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

Isaiah 7:14-16 — Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

Isaiah 8:4 — For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

Isaiah 8:8 — And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

Matthew 1:22-23 — Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

a. Immanuel: God with us.
b. The Son of God dwelling among us, in our nature (became flesh, John 1:14)

God and man meeting in one person, a Mediator between God and men. Describes his nature and office. His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor …

c. Immanuel: is the Messiah's name

Jeremiah 23:6 — In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Matthew 1:16 — And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

d. Christ is Called the Seed of the Woman

John 1:14; Genesis 49:10; Matthew 17:2; Psalm 118:25-26; Matthew 21:9; 23:39; Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 2:14;

Genesis 3:15 — And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Luke 1:31-35 — And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called **the Son of God*.
