TITLE: The Handwriting is on the Wall

TEXT: Daniel 5:26-31

 

Da 5:26-31—This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. 27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. 29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. 30 ¶ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. 31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

 

INTRODUCTION

Am 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

 

I.MENE, MENE

 

  1. Meaning: to number
  2. “God hath numbered thy kingdom and finished it”

 

II. TEKEL

 

  1. Meaning: to weigh; or, be weighed
  2. “Thou are weighed in the balances and art found wanting”
  1. Jehovah’s estimate of the worthlessness of Nebuchanezzar’s character.
  2. This warning makes a connection between his sins and his punishment. (v.23)

3. It was a warning in which no hope or mercy was given.

4. v.18-22 “Though thou knewest all this”
