God's Covenant Concerning His Words

God's

Introduction

  • Christianity is not what WE make it. It is what God has MADE it. -- Following Christ.

  • We won't get to the APPLICATION entirely in the first part concerning Israel, but a foundation and trail markers will be pointed out.

  • The First Temptation concerned Adam & Eve's memory and commitment towards what GOD HAD SAID. Genesis 3:1 "hath God said?"

  • What is a Covenant?

  • How do we know what God has said? What are His Words?

I. God Make a Covenant Concerning His Words with Israel

1. God made a covenant to be an enemy to their enemies, if Israel would a) Obey the voice of God's Angel/Messenger/Moses and b) Do ALL that God has spoken.

a. GOD SPAKE ALL THESE WORDS - There is a WEIGHTINESS HERE - 10 Commandments, Social Legislationg

Exodus 20:1 — And God spake all these words, saying,

WE'VE ALL HAD SIMILAR CONVERSATIONS: Who said that? Well, you have to consider where its coming from!

Jeremiah 23:29 — Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

Zechariah 12:1 — The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

b. The Setting of the Making of this Covenant was AWESOME.

Exodus 20:18 — And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

c. God sent A Messenger to Speak God's Message - Exodus 23

Ex 23:20-21 — Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.

  • There is a PARTICULARNESS, SPECIFICITY, A DEFINITIVENESS, DEFINITION, CERTAINNESS. (THIS and not THAT.)
  • Versus: Things Congrary to What God has said, or merely things God 'could have said'

ILLUSTRATION: 'We he could have said that.' I told Stevie the other day, that I loved him and he said, "HOw much money are gonna give me?" ---- Did he really say that? No, not really, BUT HE COULD HAVE SAID IT.

d. God Made an Agreement

Exodus 23:22 — 22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.

2. Moses Told the people ALL the Words of the Lord, and jugdments. Moses even wrote this down in a book, read the book to the people and then after building an altar provoked a consecration of the people.

Exodus 24:7 — And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

Ex 24:1 ¶ And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off. 2 And Moses alone shall come near the LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him. 3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. 4 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD. 6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. 8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

3. Israel both after the telling and reading of God's Words, consecrated themselves to the doing of them. Not, some, but all these words.

4. Moses Sprinkled the people with the Blood of the Covenant concerning all these words of God.

5. The King was to a) write a copy of this law in a book and b) read therein all the days of his life.

Deuteronomy 17:14 — When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; 15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. 18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: 20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

  • That he May learn: a) to fear the Lord his God, b) to keep all the words of this law and these statutes c) to do them
  • That: his heart be not lifted above his brethren, that he turn not aside from the commandement (left or right)
  • To the end: he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

God Made a Covenant Concerning His Words with Whosoever Would Believe

Luke 21:33 — Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
