Tune My Heart

TEXT: John 4:19-26

  • The heart is the seat of the emotions and of our will. The heart is informed by the mind, but can and often does act despite that knowledge. The heart being a stubborn thing, Some have even concluded "The Heart wants what it wants." -- meaning you can't stop it.

  • Jesus is the greatest Heart Doctor there ever was. In the Gospel is the power if given its proper place in your life, to cause you to HATE what once loved and LOVE what you once hated.

Joh 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

Robert Robinson

Robert Robinson was born in England in 1735. He lost his father at age 7. His mother was a godly woman, and far above her circumstances. Her ambition was to see her son a clergyman of the Church of England, but poverty forbade it, at 15 years old Robert began a 7 year apprenticeship to a barber.

He never was very good or attentive to barbering as he was a bookish and thoughtful boy. His master found him more given to reading than to his profession.

In 1752 came a life changing event, Out on a frolic one Sunday with like-minded companions, he joined with them in sportively rendering a fortune-telling old woman drunk and incapable, that they might hear and laugh at her predictions concerning them. The poor creature told Robinson that he would live to see his children and grandchildren. This set him a-thinking, and he resolved more than ever to "give himself to reading”.

Matthew 3:7 — who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

By an act of grace, a few weeks later he went to hear George Whitefield to mock him. The text was St. Matthew iii. 7, "the wrath to come" haunted him. He wrote to the preacher six years later penitently and pathetically. For well nigh three years he walked in darkness and fear, but in his 20th year he found "peace by believing."

Introduction: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

"Come thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace"

  • Verse 1

"Come Thou fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love

  • Verse 3

Oh, to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, oh take and seal it Seal it for Thy courts above

A New Heart - CREATE IN ME CLEAN HEART

  • When someone has a heart attach it doesn't take long for most to recognize, 'I've got to make changes.'

When mending will not DO --

Psalm 51:10 — Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

  • Cleaning the Outside of the cup ONLY won't do
  • Why is past mending? When the WHOLE HEART IS FAINT, correction won't do. A CREATIVE MIRACLE IS NEEDED.

Isa 1:5 — Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

  • a GREAT RESET is required, the pieces are too many to put back together
