  • The New England Soul, Harry S. Stout ( Oxford, 1986) New England preachers were as attentive in trying to understand recent providences as they were in remembering those that had formed their nation. They had 'a deep-seated conviction, nurtured over three New England generations, that if they did not know their history they did not know God' (p. 136).
