1 Chronicles 29:10-20 — Wherefore David blessed the LORD...

Introduction

Context of 1 Chronicles 29

(The end of David's career and life and the anointing of his son Solomon.) David exhorts them to contribute toward building and furnishing the temple, ver. 1-5. They do contribute accordingly, ver. 6-9. He offers up solemn prayers, praises and sacrifices to God, ver. 10-21. Solomon is enthroned, ver. 22-25. David finishes his course, ver. 26-30.

Oldest Things

  1. Hydra were observed for four years without any increase in mortality rate.[3] If the mortality rate remains constant, the rate determines the mean lifespan. The lifespan may be long or short, though the species technically does not "age"

Psalm 39:1-5 — Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

All time is swallowed up in God's eternity.

God's permanance constrasts everything else!

How old is God?

Many descriptions of God are given highlighting his power and ability including our text, but also the Scripture is rich with descriptions of God's relationship to time.

I. The Eternal God

Hebrews 11:6 — Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Genesis 1:1 — In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Deut. 33:27 — The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Psalm 145:13 — Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.

2 Peter 3:8 — But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

  • God steps in and out of time, but exists outside of it!

II. The Eternal Son of God

Hebrews 1:8-12 — Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

  • Eternally begotten in John 3:16; Rev. 13:8 as a lamb slain before the foundation of the world

Micah 5:2 — But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Col 1:14 — In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

III. The Eternal Spirit of God

Hebrews 9:14 — How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Genesis 1:2 — And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Job 26:13 — By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

Conclusion

Psalm 90:2 — Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
