Praying for God's Will to Be Done
Mattthew 6:9 —After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Introduction
Matthew Henry on the "Disciple's Prayer" —It has much in a little;
There are 6 petitions. The first 3 are in relation to God and his honor and the last three to our own concerns. Teaches us to "Seek First the Kingdom of God". (Matthew 6:33)
- Hallowed be thy name.
- Thy kingdom come,
- Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
- Give us this day our daily bread.
- And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: [Our Deliverance from Evil]
- Jesus Taught His Disciples to Pray that God's Will Be Done
I. THE QUESTION: Why Pray Thus? Is not God's will inevitably done?
- HEREIN in is a glorious mystery. As prayer does not change God and the prayer for God's very will (that God already knows), Why pray thus?
Genesis 18:25 — That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Romans 9:19 — Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
- Jonah ran, but "then Jonah prayed"
- Job 42:2 "I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee."
- David Prayed this Way
2 Samuel 10:12 — Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
- God is Willing. Who is on the Lord's Side?
II. THIS PRAYER POSITIONS ME Away from Sin
- To Sin is to "MISS THE MARK"
Romans 3:23 — For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
There can be no freedom from sin in this life without self-denial. We WILL want what is contrary to God. Filling this prayer with Faith will set us OPPOSED to our own sin.
2 Peter 3:9 — The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 — For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
THIS PRAYER POSITIONS ME TOWARD GOD's HOLINESS
1 Corinthians 15:28 — And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
In really praying for this we in part fulfil the prayer. We may become agents of His will. Part of the Plan (Agents of God's Will)
May The use of the disciple's prayer is proper so long as it is used in understanding. (6:7, no "vain repittion")
Around 1906, a 27 year old Christine Gibson was in Indianapolis, Indiana where she was "thrown-in" with several Holines preachers being that the friends she was staying with were friends with that group. I heard much preaching about "dying to self" and "the death route. My heart was hungry for a deeper experience in God, but I saw very little practical demonstration in their daily living, of the very truth they were preaching. She testified, "I began to become very skeptical." Reading Colossians 3, she heard the call to prayer. He requested to be excused from meals and company that day and kneeled down in her room with her Bible before here. She said, "I was very conscious that I was entering into the "Holy of Holies".
2 Corinthians 3:18 — But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
When we pray for God's Will to be Done, God is makes us “a reflection in His mirror.”
Literally, are being transfigured into the same image. When with faith we praying God's will be done, we gaze steadfastly into God's image and are transfigured into the same.
- Are we looking into God's glory, or coming short ofit?
- Sister Gibson's vision, 1) Betrayal of Gethsemane, 2) Injust trial, 3) Abuse and Malice of the crucifixion, 4) The finality of death, 5) The New Life of resurrecion = JESUS.
Jeremiah 8:20 —19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities? 20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. 21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me. 22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
